The Griefs We Hold

like a monogrammed silk handkerchief

folded in half, folded again,

slipped into a drawstring jewelry bag

and slid to the back of the top dresser drawer

or a wedding band and a locket

set inside a small sandalwood box,

brought home from Agra, there on the end table

next to the bedside lamp

mine, a rucksack weighted

with old journals and utility

dinnerware and two

steel coffee mugs and hanging from a hook next to the back door
